A strong search starts with the function the student needs to observe and improve. Phoenix and the surrounding Valley contain health-system quality offices, nursing education teams, clinical informatics departments, public-health programs, and administrative units. Tucson offers academic, community, county, and hospital settings. Students can also consider Mesa, Chandler, Scottsdale, Glendale, Flagstaff, Prescott, and Yuma when the local organization has a department and preceptor suited to the project.
Aspen's MSN specialties are Administration and Management, Forensic Nursing, Informatics, Nursing Education, and Public Health. A Nursing Education project may belong with staff development or competency training. Informatics may fit a clinical-systems or health-information team. Public Health may involve a prevention, education, or population project. Forensic Nursing demands relevant nursing expertise and might connect with trauma, correctional health, advocacy, or another appropriate service. The setting must support the academic work, not merely employ nurses.
Arizona regulation is separate from university approval
The Arizona State Board of Nursing protects the public by regulating nursing licenses and certificates and by addressing nursing practice and education within its authority. Its official resources include license verification, scope information, advisory opinions, complaints, and the Nurse Practice Act. A student and preceptor should rely on the Board for Arizona licensing and nursing-practice questions.
Aspen and the Office of Field Experience, or OFE, decide whether an academic site, project, preceptor, and documentation meet Aspen requirements. The Arizona Board does not issue Aspen Practicum Approval Letters. For an MSN practicum, the proposed preceptor is a site-affiliated RN with a master's degree and expertise aligned with the specialty. The site can add its own conditions for orientation, privacy, data access, project review, or employee participation.
Use the hours to test whether a site is realistic
Each Aspen MSN specialty includes 120 practicum hours. Administration and Management divides them into 40 hours in N550 and 80 in N586AM. Forensic Nursing, Nursing Education, and Public Health include at least 20 direct-care hours within their 120. Informatics and Administration have no direct-care minimum. Ask whether the department can support both the total time and the actual activity mix before asking a nurse to sign an agreement.
The RN-to-MSN pathway includes undergraduate field experience followed by the graduate practicum. Students should account for both rather than calling the MSN practicum their sole field requirement. In the RN-to-BSN curriculum, N492 has 30 hours, N493 has 80, and N496 has 10. Although that course breakdown adds to 120, the catalog heading says 110, so the student should confirm the applicable catalog and current expectation with Aspen.

Approach a department with a concise request
Instead of asking a hospital switchboard for any preceptor, identify the department that owns the work. A Phoenix-area informatics student might contact nursing informatics or clinical applications. A Tucson Public Health student could begin with community nursing, prevention, or county program leaders. An Administration student in Flagstaff may have better results with quality, nursing operations, or patient-safety leadership than with a general clinical unit.
The initial note should state that this is a project-based Aspen practicum, name the specialty, describe the proposed topic in one or two sentences, provide the expected dates and hours, and summarize the preceptor criteria. It should also acknowledge that Aspen and the site must approve the arrangement. That level of clarity helps a nurse decide whether the request belongs in the department and whether there is enough time to participate.
Complete OFE review before recording hours
OFE assists students with placement questions, approval steps, and alternative locations. A workplace is often worth exploring, but employment does not replace review. Approval materials can include a Site Affiliation or Practicum Site Agreement, signed Preceptor Agreement, the preceptor's CV and license report, the student's license report, a Student Profile, and the student's CV. Site forms may be added to that list.
Wait for the applicable Practicum Approval Letter before beginning the placement. After approval, hours and required reports go into ProjectConcert. Keep the approved project scope close at hand while recording activities, since a detailed entry should show how the time supported a course objective or project milestone. Arizona DNP immersion has a longer runway
Aspen's DNP consists of 1,000 supervised immersion hours in eight 125-hour courses. Aspen may approve and bank up to 500 verified prior precepted hours. The Arizona site needs an on-site, doctoral-prepared, site-affiliated preceptor with leadership and project expertise relevant to the student's work. Students should ask early about organizational review, data access, and whether the site can support a project across multiple courses.
