Aspen project work is not an NP clinical rotation
Aspen's current graduate nursing programs do not include a nurse practitioner track. In Hawaii, that means the search should not begin with prescriptive authority, NP patient panels, or a request for diagnostic clinical hours. MSN and RN-to-MSN students complete project-based specialty practicums, while DNP students complete supervised immersion connected to a practice-improvement project.
The five MSN specialties are Administration and Management, Forensic Nursing, Informatics, Nursing Education, and Public Health. Each requires 120 practicum hours with an RN who is affiliated with the site, holds a master's degree, and brings expertise relevant to the specialty. Nursing Education, Public Health, and Forensic Nursing include at least 20 direct-care hours. Administration divides the 120 hours between N550 at 40 and N586AM at 80.
Use Hawaii's official nursing regulator
The Hawaii Board of Nursing operates within the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Professional and Vocational Licensing Division. Its official pages provide nursing licensing information and access to state license services. Check a prospective preceptor through the state resource rather than assuming that an employer title confirms current licensure.
The Board regulates the nursing license. It does not approve Aspen's academic project, decide whether a facility meets course expectations, or issue the student's practicum letter. OFE performs the academic review, and the Hawaii organization may have separate credentialing, affiliation, privacy, training, and island-specific access requirements. Keep license verification, facility permission, and Aspen approval as three distinct tasks.
Island geography changes the search strategy
Honolulu and the rest of Oahu provide the greatest concentration of hospitals, state agencies, education departments, health-information teams, public-health programs, and professional organizations. Hilo and Kona can support Hawaii Island searches through regional systems, community health, public agencies, and education partners. Maui and Kauai have smaller networks where the right project may fit well, but there may be fewer alternate preceptors if the first plan changes.
Start near home, then define how far travel is sustainable for the entire course. A one-time meeting on another island is not the same as reliable access for 120 hours. Public Health projects may align with prevention, school health, community outreach, or health-equity programs. Informatics students can explore HIM, clinical systems, documentation, and data quality. Education and Administration students can look at staff development, workforce initiatives, leadership teams, and quality departments. Forensic Nursing may require especially careful planning for direct-care access and organizational permissions.

- Compare travel needs for in-person and virtual routes, then confirm the proposed format with Aspen and OFE before committing.
- Identify a backup contact or department when a small organization has only one qualified preceptor.
- Discuss weather, transportation, holiday, and facility onboarding constraints before setting weekly hour targets.
Make the 120-hour request concrete
A prospective Hawaii preceptor is more likely to understand a defined project than a broad request for 120 hours. Explain the specialty question, what access is needed, which tasks are planned, how supervision will occur, and what must be signed. Project phases can include evidence review, stakeholder engagement, baseline assessment, approved implementation, education, evaluation, and presentation. Direct-care hours must be identifiable for the three specialties that require them.
The preceptor does not need to stand next to an MSN student for every approved project task. Even so, Aspen requires a practice environment and a site-affiliated supervisor. Do not count preparatory work automatically or begin because a leader has agreed verbally. Confirm the course calendar and approval status, then enter eligible hours and required reports in ProjectConcert as instructed.
Account for the complete program requirement
RN-to-MSN students complete undergraduate field experience before the graduate specialty practicum. That distinction can affect whether one Hawaii organization can support multiple phases or whether separate settings are needed. RN-to-BSN course materials currently list N492 at 30 field hours, N493 at 80, and N496 at 10. The numbers add to 120, although Aspen's catalog heading says 110. Confirm the governing catalog and handbook with the program before promising a site a total.
DNP students complete 1,000 supervised immersion hours across eight courses of 125 hours. Aspen may approve up to 500 verified prior precepted hours for banking. The DNP arrangement calls for an on-site, doctoral-prepared professional affiliated with the site and experienced in healthcare leadership and the project topic. IRB approval must occur before data collection or analysis. On an island with few large systems, early organizational support for the project and data plan is particularly important.
Prepare the OFE file before the deadline
OFE assists with placement questions, approval, and alternatives. Current requirements may include the Site Affiliation or Practicum Site Agreement, a physically signed Preceptor Agreement, the preceptor's CV and applicable license report, the student's license report, Student Profile, and student CV. A Hawaii facility can require additional health, safety, privacy, or background documents. The Student Performance Evaluation occurs later and is not one of the initial items that creates approval.
The student should receive a Practicum Approval Letter or DNP Immersion Approval Letter before beginning the corresponding experience. Save copies of submitted items and monitor anything dependent on a site signature. If the preceptor, island, department, or project access changes, ask OFE how to proceed before recording more work under the old arrangement.
