Aspen has no nurse practitioner tracks. An Illinois student seeking an Aspen preceptor is usually arranging a project-based MSN specialty practicum or DNP immersion, not hours in assessment, diagnosis, or prescribing. Clear language prevents the request from being routed to clinical-rotation offices that cannot support an administration, education, informatics, public-health, or forensic quality-improvement project.
Each Aspen MSN specialty carries 120 practicum hours with a site-affiliated RN who has a master's degree and matching expertise. Administration divides those hours between N550 at 40 and N586AM at 80. Nursing Education, Public Health, and Forensic Nursing include at least 20 direct-care hours within the 120. Informatics and Administration have no stated direct-care minimum, but they still require an appropriate setting, supervision, and approved project access.
Illinois license regulation and Aspen approval are separate
The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation regulates nursing licensure through its nursing profession resources. Use the official IDFPR site and license lookup to confirm the current Illinois status of a prospective RN preceptor. OFE will also need evidence of graduate education, site affiliation, and relevant specialty experience.
IDFPR does not decide whether an Aspen project meets a course outcome. Aspen's Office of Field Experience performs the academic placement review, while the Illinois facility controls local onboarding and access. A system may need an affiliation agreement, legal review, training modules, background screening, occupational health clearance, or a separate decision about project data. Build those steps into the schedule instead of treating license verification as the final approval.
Chicago is one market, not the whole state
Chicago and its suburbs offer academic medical centers, community hospitals, public-health agencies, associations, education offices, data and informatics teams, corrections partners, and large administrative networks. Competition and formal affiliation cycles can be intense. Rockford, Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, Champaign-Urbana, Springfield, the Metro East area, and smaller regional systems may offer a different balance of project access and preceptor availability.
Choose settings by specialty rather than prestige. Nursing Education may fit workforce development, staff education, simulation support, or continuing education. Informatics can fit clinical applications, HIM, data quality, or documentation improvement. Public Health may fit city, county, school, prevention, or community programs. Administration needs access to a leadership problem and stakeholders. Forensic Nursing can align with emergency care, corrections, courts, medical examiner relationships, or victim services when confidentiality and direct-care requirements are resolved.
A stronger Illinois outreach packet includes

Organize the 120 hours around deliverables
An MSN practicum can include approved evidence review, stakeholder engagement, assessment of current practice, project design, implementation tasks, education, evaluation, analysis, and reporting. A preceptor need not physically observe every task, but the work must remain connected to the approved site and supervised project. Students in Education, Public Health, or Forensic Nursing should identify how the 20 direct-care hours fit rather than waiting until the end of the course.
Large Illinois systems may have firm student-placement deadlines, while a smaller site may need time to understand Aspen's agreement. Public agencies can follow budget-year or board-meeting calendars. Confirm who owns the project, what access is permitted, how hours will be verified, and when signatures will be available. Do not record preparatory work as practicum time until the placement is approved and the course rules allow it.
Do not overlook the other Aspen pathways
RN-to-MSN includes undergraduate field experience before the 120-hour graduate practicum. That can call for more than one Illinois setting or a workplace capable of supporting distinct phases. RN-to-BSN materials list N492 at 30 field hours, N493 at 80, and N496 at 10. Although those figures add to 120, the current Aspen catalog heading states 110. Students should ask which handbook and catalog apply to their cohort and use the confirmed requirement in site discussions.
Aspen's DNP requires 1,000 supervised immersion hours in eight courses at 125 hours each. Up to 500 verified prior precepted hours may be approved and banked. The DNP calls for an approved site and an on-site, doctoral-prepared professional affiliated with it, with healthcare leadership and project-topic expertise. IRB approval must occur before data collection or analysis, so the Illinois organization needs to support both the project and the review sequence.
From prospective Illinois site to approval letter
OFE assists with questions, placement issues, alternatives, and approval. The current file may require a Site Affiliation or Practicum Site Agreement, signed Preceptor Agreement, preceptor CV and license report, student license report, Student Profile, and student CV. The Illinois host may add its own requirements. The Student Performance Evaluation is completed later and should not be confused with the initial approval materials.
Wait for the Practicum Approval Letter or DNP Immersion Approval Letter before starting the corresponding work. ProjectConcert is used for required hour documentation, reports, and evaluations. If a system transfers the student to another location, the preceptor changes employers, or project data become unavailable, check with OFE before continuing as if the original approval still applies.
