Name the Aspen experience correctly
Aspen currently offers no nurse practitioner tracks. Its MSN and RN-to-MSN pathways use project-based practica in Administration and Management, Forensic Nursing, Informatics, Nursing Education, and Public Health. The DNP uses supervised immersion tied to a practice-improvement project. This definition should appear in Kansas outreach so a facility does not mistake the request for direct patient-care NP training.
Each MSN specialty requires 120 hours and a site-affiliated RN preceptor with a master's degree and relevant expertise. Administration divides the hours into N550 at 40 and N586AM at 80. Nursing Education, Public Health, and Forensic Nursing include a minimum 20 direct-care hours within the 120. Informatics and Administration do not have that minimum, but they still need a genuine practice setting, appropriate project access, and supervision.
Use the Kansas State Board of Nursing as the license source
The Kansas State Board of Nursing provides official nursing license, regulation, and verification resources. Use its site when checking the standing of a prospective RN preceptor. A license record alone does not establish the master's degree, specialty experience, or site connection Aspen expects, so collect those items separately for OFE review.
KSBN regulates nursing practice and licenses in Kansas. It does not approve Aspen's academic site or project. OFE assesses the educational arrangement, and the host organization grants local access. A Kansas facility may require affiliation review, privacy and security training, background or health documentation, and permission from nursing education, legal, research, or quality offices. Search both sides of the metro boundary
Wichita offers large systems, public-health resources, education departments, administrative teams, and health-information operations. Topeka adds state government, association, public agency, and regional health opportunities. Lawrence and Manhattan can connect students with academic, community, and public-health partners. Salina, Hays, Garden City, Dodge City, Pittsburg, and other regional centers may support projects in hospitals, schools, long-term care, community health, and rural networks.
Kansas City students should define whether a prospective site is legally in Kansas or Missouri. The location affects license verification, agreements, facility rules, and the state resources used in the placement file. A short commute across the state line does not make the two arrangements interchangeable. Tell OFE the exact site address and preceptor license information rather than using the metro name alone.
Specialty-led starting points
- Administration: operational leadership, quality, workforce, long-term care, or professional organizations.
- Informatics: clinical applications, HIM, documentation, workflow, data quality, or reporting teams.
- Nursing Education or Public Health: staff development, schools, local health departments, prevention, and community programs.

Present a schedule, not just a total
A Kansas preceptor needs to know how the 120 hours support a project. A practical outline can include evidence review, stakeholder input, baseline assessment, intervention design, approved implementation, education, evaluation, and reporting. Students in the three direct-care specialties should describe where the 20 hours occur. This specificity helps the site decide whether it has the right resources and authority.
Weather, rural travel, harvest seasons, staffing, school calendars, and fixed education-office deadlines can affect availability. Confirm the course dates, expected weekly pattern, alternate meeting options, data limits, and who signs ProjectConcert-related records. The preceptor need not stand beside an MSN student for every approved task, but a verbal yes does not authorize the student to begin. Wait for the approval letter.
Account for field hours and DNP scale
RN-to-MSN includes undergraduate field experience before the graduate 120-hour practicum. A Kansas workplace may support both phases only when each has a suitable project and approval. For RN-to-BSN, current handbook course figures are N492 at 30 field hours, N493 at 80, and N496 at 10. They add to 120, while the current catalog heading says 110. Confirm the materials that govern the student's cohort before defining a site commitment.
The DNP includes 1,000 supervised immersion hours across eight 125-hour courses. Aspen may approve up to 500 verified prior precepted hours for banking. The proposed Kansas site must support sustained project work, and the preceptor must be an on-site, doctoral-prepared, site-affiliated professional with relevant leadership and topic knowledge. IRB approval is required before data collection or analysis, so organizational authorization should be explored early.
Complete the OFE approval trail
OFE assists with placement questions, reviews, and possible alternatives. Current documents may include the Site Affiliation or Practicum Site Agreement, physically signed Preceptor Agreement, preceptor CV and license report, student license report, Student Profile, and student CV. A Kansas organization may add its own requirements. The Student Performance Evaluation is used later in the practicum and is not an initial approval document.
Begin only after the Practicum Approval Letter or DNP Immersion Approval Letter has been issued for the arrangement. Use ProjectConcert for required hours, reports, and evaluations according to current instructions. A preceptor departure, site change, or loss of project access should be reported to OFE before the student continues under a replacement plan.
