Maryland regulates the license, Aspen approves the placement
The Maryland Board of Nursing, within the Maryland Department of Health, regulates nursing licenses and nursing practice. Its official website provides license lookup, the Nurse Practice Act, education resources, discipline information, and other regulatory services. Use the Board's lookup to verify the Maryland RN license of a proposed MSN preceptor and retain the official result with the person's CV and license report.
The Board does not approve Aspen course projects or issue academic placement letters. Aspen and OFE review the preceptor, site, project, schedule, and documents. The host organization separately decides whether it can provide access, sign an agreement, and support the proposed activity. Keep these decisions separate so a verified license is not mistaken for complete academic approval.
Direct each specialty to the right door
Aspen currently offers no nurse practitioner tracks. Each MSN student completes a 120-hour project-based practicum in Administration and Management, Forensic Nursing, Informatics, Nursing Education, or Public Health. The preceptor must be a site-affiliated RN with a master's degree and expertise relevant to the specialty. That makes a department-level search more useful than a general request for clinical supervision.
Nursing Education students can approach professional-development, academic, simulation, or community-education teams. Informatics students can look for clinical applications, EHR training, data governance, or HIM departments. Administration projects may fit quality, operations, workforce, or patient-safety teams. Forensic Nursing may fit emergency services, correctional health, advocacy, or multidisciplinary programs. Public Health can fit county health departments, schools, community agencies, or population-health offices.
What a concise Maryland request should include

- A short project aim and the access needed to complete it.

Forensic Nursing, Nursing Education, and Public Health require at least 20 direct-care hours within the 120 MSN hours. Informatics and Administration do not have that minimum. Administration divides the practicum into N550 at 40 hours and N586AM at 80 hours. Confirm that the Maryland setting can support the type of work required, not just the total time.
RN-to-MSN students complete undergraduate field experience and later the 120-hour graduate practicum, so plan for both stages. RN-to-BSN materials show N492 at 30 hours, N493 at 80 hours, and N496 at 10 hours. These figures total 120 while an Aspen catalog heading says 110. Confirm the catalog and course instructions that apply to your enrollment before creating a site schedule.
Prepare for institutional review
Larger Maryland organizations may route student projects through education, legal, compliance, privacy, research, or human-resources offices. Ask about that path during the first serious conversation. Approval materials can include a Site Affiliation or Practicum Site Agreement, signed Preceptor Agreement, preceptor CV and license report, student license report, Student Profile, and student CV. Do not send sensitive documents until you know the appropriate recipient and method.
OFE assists with placement questions, approvals, documentation, and alternative locations. Many students explore their workplace, but workplace access still needs academic review. DNP projects add continuity and IRB questions
Aspen DNP students complete 1,000 supervised immersion hours in eight 125-hour courses. Up to 500 verified prior precepted hours may be approved and banked. The Maryland project needs an approved site and an on-site, doctoral-prepared, site-affiliated preceptor with leadership and topic expertise. Ask whether the preceptor and site can support the project over the needed sequence, not only for one meeting.
IRB approval is required before data collection or analysis. A site's internal review may be separate from Aspen's academic and IRB process, so disclose the planned project honestly and ask which reviews apply. Do not begin immersion activity or data work without the required letters and approvals.
