A large health market still calls for a narrow request
Boston and Cambridge contain academic medical centers, public-health organizations, universities, technology teams, and administrative offices. These organizations may have formal student pathways and several internal reviewers, so begin with the department tied to the project. Worcester offers health systems, higher education, public-health and community partners in central Massachusetts. Springfield and Holyoke provide western Massachusetts options through hospitals, schools, community agencies, and regional health programs.
Lowell, Lawrence, and other Merrimack Valley communities can fit public-health, education, population-health, and quality work. The South Shore, New Bedford, Fall River, Cape Cod, and the islands may offer regional systems and community settings, though schedules and travel need careful planning. A focused request should explain the project problem, the expected work, the hours, and why the department is a credible fit.
Do not ask for an NP rotation
Aspen University currently offers no nurse practitioner tracks. Its MSN students complete 120-hour project-based specialty practicums in Administration and Management, Forensic Nursing, Informatics, Nursing Education, or Public Health. The MSN preceptor must be a site-affiliated RN with a master's degree and expertise relevant to the specialty. Clear language prevents a Massachusetts education office from routing you into a clinical-rotation process that does not match the assignment.
Nursing Education can fit professional-development, simulation, academic, or patient-education teams. Informatics can fit clinical applications, EHR education, data quality, or HIM. Public Health can fit local boards or departments of health, schools, community programs, or population-health teams. Forensic Nursing can fit advocacy, correctional health, emergency services, or specialized programs. Administration can fit operations, quality, safety, or workforce offices.
The Massachusetts Board handles professional regulation
The Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing regulates nursing practice and nursing education in the Commonwealth. Its official Mass.gov pages provide license checks, application and renewal services, regulations, nursing-practice guidance, meetings, and complaint information. Use the official license check when reviewing a proposed preceptor and keep the result with the CV and license report requested for Aspen's process.
The Board does not select your preceptor or approve an Aspen specialty project. Aspen and OFE decide whether the proposed site, preceptor, plan, and documents meet academic requirements. The Massachusetts organization controls its own project access and agreement process. A Board license check is one part of due diligence, not a substitute for either decision.
Plan the 120 hours by activity
Forensic Nursing, Nursing Education, and Public Health include at least 20 direct-care hours within the 120. Informatics and Administration do not have that direct-care minimum. Administration divides the hours between N550 at 40 and N586AM at 80. Build a simple activity map that shows where required direct care, project development, implementation, meetings, and preceptor review will occur, subject to Aspen's course guidance.
RN-to-MSN students complete undergraduate field experience before the graduate 120-hour practicum, so they should identify the requirement attached to the current stage. RN-to-BSN course figures are N492 at 30 hours, N493 at 80 hours, and N496 at 10 hours. They add to 120, while an Aspen catalog heading says 110. Confirm the applicable catalog and current course instructions rather than publishing one number to a site as final.
Allow room for the agreement process
Massachusetts hospitals and universities may review a student project through education, compliance, privacy, legal, research, or data-governance offices. Ask which office owns the decision before sending documents. Approval materials can include a Site Affiliation or Practicum Site Agreement, signed Preceptor Agreement, preceptor CV and license report, student license report, Student Profile, and student CV.
OFE assists with placement questions, approvals, paperwork, and alternative locations. Many students explore their workplace, but employment does not bypass review. You need the applicable Practicum Approval Letter or DNP Immersion Approval Letter before beginning. After approval, record hours and required reports in ProjectConcert. DNP students need a site that lasts
The Aspen DNP includes 1,000 supervised immersion hours across eight 125-hour courses. Up to 500 verified prior precepted hours may be approved and banked. A Massachusetts DNP site must support an on-site, doctoral-prepared, site-affiliated preceptor with leadership and relevant project expertise. Ask about continuity, project authority, access, and organizational review across the full plan.
IRB approval is required before data collection or analysis. A host organization may have a separate review process, especially where records, patients, staff data, or operational systems are involved. Describe the project accurately and wait for every applicable approval before beginning the restricted activity.
