The Aspen MSN preceptor should be a site-affiliated RN with a master's degree and expertise relevant to Administration and Management, Forensic Nursing, Informatics, Nursing Education, or Public Health. A willing nurse may still be a weak match if the graduate preparation, role, department access, or project experience does not align. Ask about credentials, current responsibilities, availability, and permission to precept before exchanging full forms.
The project needs the same early screen. Describe what the student will produce or improve, which people or processes are involved, and what access is needed. A Missouri department should understand the request well enough to confirm it can host the work for the full course period.
Missouri searches can follow several health corridors
St. Louis has large health systems, academic operations, quality offices, education teams, informatics departments, community programs, and forensic or correctional possibilities. Kansas City offers similar variety across hospitals, public health, clinical systems, and nursing leadership. Columbia can support academic, regional, and public-health projects. Springfield and Joplin may provide health-system administration, staff development, and community settings, while Jefferson City can be useful for public-sector health or organizational work.
Match the destination to the specialty. Nursing Education students can seek professional development, simulation, or competency teams. Public Health projects can connect with prevention or community education. Forensic Nursing requires a department and RN with actual relevant expertise.
Missouri regulation and Aspen approval are separate
The Missouri State Board of Nursing regulates nursing licensure and professional practice in Missouri. Students should direct Missouri licensing and nursing-practice questions there.
Aspen University and the Office of Field Experience, or OFE, assess academic fit. The Board does not choose an Aspen project or issue the university's approval letter. The facility also controls its own onboarding, privacy, access, and project-review conditions. A sound placement needs a properly licensed team, Aspen approval, and site permission, with none of those treated as a substitute for the others.
Use the hour requirements to test feasibility
Every Aspen MSN specialty includes a 120-hour practicum. Administration and Management splits the work into 40 hours in N550 and 80 in N586AM. Forensic Nursing, Nursing Education, and Public Health include at least 20 direct-care hours within the total. Informatics and Administration do not carry that minimum. A draft calendar helps the preceptor see whether meetings, supervised activity, direct care when required, and project review can fit.
RN-to-MSN students complete undergraduate field experience before their graduate practicum. The final 120 hours are not their sole field requirement. RN-to-BSN students should verify the current catalog: N492 lists 30 hours, N493 lists 80, and N496 lists 10. These figures total 120, while Aspen's catalog heading says 110. Confirm the applicable requirements instead of selecting one total without context.
Build one approval file for OFE and the site
OFE assists with placement questions, approvals, documents, and alternative locations. Many students begin at work, but a familiar Missouri employer still needs review. Materials can include a Site Affiliation or Practicum Site Agreement, signed Preceptor Agreement, preceptor CV and license report, student license report, Student Profile, and student CV. The organization may require additional compliance or project documents.
Hours may begin only after the applicable Practicum Approval Letter is issued. Approved activity and required reports then go into ProjectConcert. A weekly record should connect each block of time to the approved project and course objectives, not merely list presence at the site. Aspen's DNP requires 1,000 supervised immersion hours across eight 125-hour courses. Up to 500 verified prior precepted hours may be approved and banked. The Missouri site needs an on-site, doctoral-prepared, site-affiliated preceptor with relevant leadership and project expertise. Because the project can span courses, discuss continuity, access, and supervision over time.
IRB approval is required before data collection or analysis. A health system or other organization may conduct its own project determination as well.
