New York offers many markets, but one project goal
New York City and its boroughs offer health-system education, informatics, quality, public-health, forensic, correctional, community, and administrative settings. Long Island and Westchester add large regional organizations and public-health programs. Albany and the Capital Region can support health-system, public-sector, and academic projects. Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse have major regional health and education settings, while Binghamton, Utica, the Hudson Valley, and North Country communities can offer population, access, quality, and staff-development work.
The number of organizations can obscure the central question: which department can support the approved project? A targeted search for nursing informatics or professional development is more useful than a general inquiry to every hospital. The student should identify the specialty, project, required activity, expected dates, and kind of supervision before outreach begins.
New York regulates nurses through NYSED
The New York State Education Department Office of the Professions nursing page is the official state source for registered professional nursing licensure, registration, laws, practice information, education, verification, and State Board resources. Students and proposed preceptors should use NYSED for New York licensing and professional-practice questions.
NYSED does not issue an Aspen practicum or immersion approval letter. Aspen University and the Office of Field Experience, or OFE, review academic fit, while the host organization controls access, privacy, onboarding, and project authorization. A New York contact's informal agreement remains preliminary until the university and site processes are complete.
Match credentials and specialty before chasing availability
Aspen's MSN specialties are Administration and Management, Forensic Nursing, Informatics, Nursing Education, and Public Health. The proposed preceptor should be a site-affiliated RN with a master's degree and expertise relevant to the selected specialty. Verify the degree, license, role, site relationship, project experience, and capacity to supervise before assuming an available RN is suitable.
Nursing Education can fit staff development, competency, simulation, or patient education. Informatics may align with clinical systems and workflow. Administration can connect to quality, safety, operations, or leadership. Public Health may involve prevention and community programming. Forensic Nursing needs actual specialty relevance, potentially within trauma, correctional health, advocacy, or another appropriate program.
Use an hour map to make the request concrete
Every Aspen MSN specialty has a 120-hour practicum. Administration and Management divides the work between N550 at 40 hours and N586AM at 80. Forensic Nursing, Nursing Education, and Public Health include at least 20 direct-care hours within the 120. Informatics and Administration do not have that minimum. A New York site should see how the planned activity mix relates to those requirements.
RN-to-MSN students complete undergraduate field experience and then the graduate practicum. The graduate 120 hours are not their only field requirement. RN-to-BSN students should verify the catalog that applies to them because N492 lists 30 hours, N493 lists 80, and N496 lists 10, which add to 120, while Aspen's catalog heading says 110. Direct confirmation avoids a mistaken timeline.
- Give the department a short project description, calendar, and supervision outline.
- Identify required direct-care activity where applicable.
- Ask who reviews student agreements and project or data access.
- Avoid counting ordinary employment duties unless they are part of the approved plan.
OFE review turns a match into permission to start
OFE assists with placement questions, approvals, documentation, and alternative locations. Many New York students explore their employer, but familiarity does not remove review. Materials can include a Site Affiliation or Practicum Site Agreement, signed Preceptor Agreement, preceptor CV and license report, student license report, Student Profile, and student CV. A site may require additional contracts, compliance, or project documents.
The student needs the applicable Practicum Approval Letter before beginning hours. After the formal start, hours and required reports are recorded in ProjectConcert. Entries should identify the activity, objective, and project connection. If the project scope or site changes, seek guidance rather than presuming the original approval transfers.
DNP immersion needs a multi-course New York site
Aspen's DNP requires 1,000 supervised immersion hours in eight 125-hour courses. Aspen may approve and bank up to 500 verified prior precepted hours. The New York site must provide an on-site, doctoral-prepared, site-affiliated preceptor with relevant leadership and project expertise. Continuity matters because the work may extend across several courses.
IRB approval is required before data collection or analysis. The organization may also conduct a research, quality, privacy, or project determination.
