Short driving distances do not make every organization interchangeable. A project still belongs with the department that owns the work. Students should identify the function, expected access, course dates, and kind of supervision before asking for a preceptor. A focused department request is more useful than a statewide list of facilities.
Because neighboring organizations may share professional networks, a respectful referral request can be useful when the first department declines. Ask whether another local team performs the relevant function, but present the full Aspen criteria again rather than assuming that a referral automatically satisfies academic or site requirements.
Use the specialty to identify the right team
Aspen's MSN specialties are Administration and Management, Forensic Nursing, Informatics, Nursing Education, and Public Health. Nursing Education may fit professional development, competency, simulation, or patient teaching. Informatics can align with clinical applications or documentation workflow. Administration may connect with nursing operations, safety, quality, or leadership. Public Health can involve prevention or community programming.
Forensic Nursing requires relevant expertise and might align with trauma services, correctional health, advocacy, or another appropriate program. The proposed MSN preceptor should be a site-affiliated RN with a master's degree and expertise relevant to the specialty. Verify the degree, license, role, and availability before depending on the match.
Rhode Island's nursing Board has a separate job

Every Aspen MSN specialty includes a 120-hour practicum. Administration and Management separates the hours into N550 at 40 and N586AM at 80. Forensic Nursing, Nursing Education, and Public Health include at least 20 direct-care hours within the total. Informatics and Administration have no direct-care minimum. The proposed site should see both the total and the expected activity mix.
RN-to-MSN students complete undergraduate field experience before their 120-hour graduate practicum, so the graduate work is not their only field requirement. RN-to-BSN students should confirm the applicable catalog. N492 has 30 hours, N493 has 80, and N496 has 10, which add to 120, while Aspen's catalog heading says 110. Direct confirmation should guide the course calendar.

OFE approval establishes permission to begin
OFE assists with placement questions, approval, documents, and alternative locations. Many Rhode Island students explore a current workplace, but a familiar site still needs review. Materials can include a Site Affiliation or Practicum Site Agreement, signed Preceptor Agreement, preceptor CV and license report, student license report, Student Profile, and student CV. The organization may add its own forms.

Aspen DNP students complete 1,000 supervised immersion hours in eight 125-hour courses. Aspen may approve and bank up to 500 verified prior precepted hours. A Rhode Island DNP site requires an on-site, doctoral-prepared, site-affiliated preceptor with leadership and project expertise. The student should confirm that access and supervision can continue over the project sequence.
IRB approval is required before data collection or analysis, and the site may impose its own project review.
