Aspen MSN specialties are Administration and Management, Forensic Nursing, Informatics, Nursing Education, and Public Health. Administration may fit nursing operations, quality, or leadership. Informatics can align with clinical systems and workflow. Nursing Education can involve competency, staff development, simulation, or patient teaching. Public Health may connect to prevention, community education, or regional population needs.
Forensic Nursing calls for relevant specialty experience, potentially in trauma, correctional health, advocacy, or another suitable setting. For any MSN specialty, the proposed preceptor should be a site-affiliated RN with a master's degree and relevant expertise. Verify credentials, role, access, and schedule before relying on the match.
South Dakota nursing regulation is separate from Aspen review
The South Dakota Board of Nursing regulates nursing licensure, practice, and education and provides official licensing, verification, statutes, rules, discipline, and Board resources. Students and proposed preceptors should use it for South Dakota nursing-regulation questions.
Aspen University and the Office of Field Experience, or OFE, decide whether an academic site, preceptor, project, and document package meet program requirements. The Board does not issue Aspen's approval letter. The host organization separately controls orientation, privacy, access, agreements, and project review.
Build required hours into a regional calendar
Every Aspen MSN specialty includes a 120-hour practicum. Administration and Management divides those hours between N550 at 40 and N586AM at 80. Forensic Nursing, Nursing Education, and Public Health include at least 20 direct-care hours within the total. Informatics and Administration have no direct-care minimum. A weekly plan should include realistic travel and preceptor availability.
RN-to-MSN students complete undergraduate field experience before the 120-hour graduate practicum, so they must plan more than the graduate component. RN-to-BSN students should confirm the catalog that applies. N492 lists 30 hours, N493 lists 80, and N496 lists 10, adding to 120, while Aspen's catalog heading says 110. Direct confirmation should guide the individual schedule.

Complete the OFE process before starting

The organization may add its own documents.
Wait for the applicable Practicum Approval Letter before beginning hours. Approved activity and required reports are then recorded in ProjectConcert. Entries should explain the project connection and course objective, particularly when some preparation occurs away from the main site.
DNP immersion needs an on-site, long-term preceptor
Aspen DNP students complete 1,000 supervised immersion hours across eight 125-hour courses. Aspen may approve and bank up to 500 verified prior precepted hours. A South Dakota DNP site needs an on-site, doctoral-prepared, site-affiliated preceptor with leadership and project expertise. Discuss continuity across the project sequence before committing.
