Richmond adds state government, public health, academic settings, system administration, quality offices, and education departments. Charlottesville can fit academic, quality, education, and research-oriented projects. Roanoke and Lynchburg serve central and southwest regions through hospitals, schools, community agencies, and operational teams. Farther southwest, cities such as Bristol and communities across the coalfields may support rural health, workforce education, and population-focused work. Choose a region based on both project access and travel you can sustain.
The Virginia Board's role stops at regulation
The Virginia Board of Nursing, within the Department of Health Professions, regulates RNs, LPNs, advanced practice nurses, and several other professions. Its official site provides practitioner lookup, licensing, renewal, laws and regulations, disciplinary information, education resources, and complaint services. Use Virginia's official practitioner information to verify a proposed RN preceptor.
The Board does not decide whether an Aspen specialty project is academically suitable. Aspen and OFE approve the placement after reviewing the preceptor, site, project, and documents. The Virginia organization separately controls access and agreement decisions. Save the official license result with the preceptor CV and license report, but do not begin until Aspen issues the applicable letter.
Connect each specialty to an operating department
Aspen currently offers no nurse practitioner tracks. Its MSN specialties are Administration and Management, Forensic Nursing, Informatics, Nursing Education, and Public Health. Each requires a 120-hour project-based practicum. The preceptor must be a site-affiliated RN with a master's degree and relevant expertise. Present that framework when contacting a Virginia setting.
Administration may fit system operations, patient safety, quality, workforce, or care coordination. Informatics may fit clinical applications, HIM, EHR education, analytics support, or workflow. Nursing Education may fit professional development, academic nursing, simulation, or community education. Public Health may fit local health districts, schools, agencies, or population-health teams. Forensic Nursing may fit advocacy, correctional health, emergency services, or multidisciplinary programs.
Design the activity mix before asking for a yes
Forensic Nursing, Nursing Education, and Public Health include at least 20 direct-care hours within the 120. Informatics and Administration do not have that direct-care minimum. Administration is split between N550 at 40 hours and N586AM at 80 hours. Confirm that the site can support both the project and any required direct-care work.
RN-to-MSN students complete undergraduate field experience and later the 120-hour graduate practicum. RN-to-BSN course figures are N492 at 30 hours, N493 at 80 hours, and N496 at 10 hours. The figures add to 120 while an Aspen catalog heading says 110. Confirm the applicable catalog and current course instructions before agreeing on dates.
Prepare for the host's internal review
Virginia health systems, universities, and government-linked organizations may involve education, legal, compliance, privacy, research, or data offices. Identify the right office early. Aspen materials can include a Site Affiliation or Practicum Site Agreement, signed Preceptor Agreement, preceptor CV and license report, student license report, Student Profile, and student CV.
OFE assists with placement questions, approvals, paperwork, and alternative locations. Many students explore their workplace, but employment does not remove the review. Wait for the Practicum Approval Letter or DNP Immersion Approval Letter before starting. Record approved hours and required reports in ProjectConcert afterward.
DNP placement is a project relationship
Aspen DNP students complete 1,000 supervised immersion hours in eight 125-hour courses. Up to 500 verified prior precepted hours may be approved and banked. The Virginia site needs an on-site, doctoral-prepared, site-affiliated preceptor with leadership and project expertise. Discuss authority, access, continuity, and the organization's project priorities before seeking final approval.
IRB approval is required before data collection or analysis. A Virginia host may have a separate internal review, particularly for records, staff data, patient contact, or operational change. Each required review must be complete before the restricted activity starts.
