Aim the request at the specialty department
Aspen currently offers no nurse practitioner tracks. Its MSN specialties are Administration and Management, Forensic Nursing, Informatics, Nursing Education, and Public Health, each with a 120-hour project-based practicum. The preceptor must be a site-affiliated RN with a master's degree and expertise relevant to the specialty. Asking for a project mentor and practicum setting is more accurate than asking for an NP rotation.
Nursing Education can fit professional development, simulation, academic nursing, or community education. Informatics can fit HIM, clinical applications, EHR education, data quality, or workflow teams. Administration can fit operations, patient safety, quality, care coordination, or workforce offices. Public Health can fit county health departments, schools, community organizations, or population-health programs. Forensic Nursing may fit correctional health, advocacy, emergency services, or multidisciplinary response settings.
Use the West Virginia RN Board for license verification
The West Virginia RN Board regulates registered professional nurses and provides official license lookup, licensing, law and scope, discipline, and meeting resources. The RN Board does not approve an Aspen course project. Aspen and OFE decide whether the preceptor, site, project, schedule, and documents meet academic requirements. Test whether the site can supply the right hours
Forensic Nursing, Nursing Education, and Public Health include at least 20 direct-care hours within the 120 MSN hours. Informatics and Administration do not have that direct-care minimum. Administration divides its hours between N550 at 40 and N586AM at 80. Ask the site where each required activity can occur and who will supervise it.
RN-to-MSN students complete undergraduate field experience before the 120-hour graduate practicum. RN-to-BSN course figures are N492 at 30 hours, N493 at 80 hours, and N496 at 10 hours. Those add to 120 while an Aspen catalog heading states 110. Confirm the applicable catalog and current course instructions before finalizing a West Virginia schedule.
Organize paperwork while the site considers the project
A regional hospital or small agency may have no dedicated student-placement office. Ask who has authority to discuss the Site Agreement and project access. Approval materials can include a Site Affiliation or Practicum Site Agreement, signed Preceptor Agreement, preceptor CV and license report, student license report, Student Profile, and student CV.
OFE assists with placement questions, approvals, paperwork, and alternative locations. Many students explore their workplace, but a workplace lead still requires review. Wait for the Practicum Approval Letter or DNP Immersion Approval Letter before starting. Record approved hours and required reports in ProjectConcert after the authorized start.
DNP work needs sustained local access
Aspen DNP students complete 1,000 supervised immersion hours in eight 125-hour courses. Up to 500 verified prior precepted hours may be approved and banked. A West Virginia DNP site needs an on-site, doctoral-prepared, site-affiliated preceptor with relevant leadership and project expertise. Confirm that the site and preceptor can support the project over time.
IRB approval is required before data collection or analysis. A host may also require internal review for patient, staff, records, or operational data. The DNP Immersion Approval Letter, IRB decision, and any site permission must be in place before the relevant activity begins.
